#2 -Basic Spey Casting – Getting Started With a Two-Handed Rod

Date/Time: Tuesday 8 a.m. to noon
Instructor: Liam Duffy
Description: A two-handed casting workshop designed just for beginners!
Equipment: Two-handed rod, line reel, wading gear, eye/head protection, leaders and wool tag.

#3 -Fly Swatters and Beethoven

Date/Time: Tuesday 8 a.m. to noon
Instructor: Lester Rosenthal
Description: Originally described by John Matson and Mike Rieser, this one- to two-hour class teaches beginners and fishing guides a simple method to false cast and do a pickup and laydown cast. On completion of the class most participants will be able to false cast loops adequate for fishing.
Equipment: Students should bring a 5- to 7-weight medium fast, balanced fly rod and reel, and spooled with a brightly colored weight forward fly line with a 7½-foot tapered leader with a 0.015-sized tippet. They must wear eye protection. In case of rain, bring rain gear and proper shoes to keep feet dry.
Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced

#4 - The Double Haul for Dummies

Date/Time: Tuesday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Instructor: Rhea Topping
Description: This fun and popular workshop covers numerous exercises and methodologies for how to learn and how to teach the double haul. You will have the opportunity to use a shooting head as well. It is an excellent workshop for instructors. This year’s class will closely follow the contents of Topping’s instructional double haul video that will be available at conclave. Students must be able to false cast and shoot line.
Equipment: 5- or 6-weight rod and weight-forward floating line.

#5 - Irish Patterns With A Twist!

Date/Time: Tuesday 9 a.m. to noon
Instructor: Lawrence Finney and Gerard Teggart
Description: Expert tuition by two of Ireland’s finest fly dressers demonstrating and guiding students on how to dress unique patterns that have been developed over the last year with amazing results.
Equipment: Basic tying tools.

#6 - Saltwater Fly Tying

Date/Time: Tuesday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Instructor: Dr. Gary Hall
Description: Participants will learn to tie inshore and offshore patterns, some of which Dr. Hall perfected.
Equipment: A vise that can handle No. 2 through larger size hooks and basic fly tying tools. Instructor will supply the materials necessary for the patterns to be tied.
Skill Level: Intermediate

#7 - Fishing for Fall Run Trout on the Madison River in Yellowstone Park

Date/Time: Tuesday: 8 a.m. to noon
Instructor: Mike Loebl
Description: Anglers will learn when, where and how to swing soft hackles, streamers and wet flies for the fall run in the Madison River in Yellowstone Park. Casting instruction will be given if needed.
Equipment: Wading equipment, Yellowstone Park fishing license, 5-to 6-weight rod/reel or light Spey rod outfit.

#8 - Introduction to Small Stream Dry Fly Fishing

Date/Time: Tuesday: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Instructor: Nick Hatch
Description: This workshop is intended for the beginner wishing to know the basics of small stream fishing. What better environment to start your fly fishing career or introduce someone to the sport than in the intimate setting of a small stream using dry flies? We will cover gear, fishing casts and tactics, and how to plan for a positive fishing experience, with plenty of time for questions.
Equipment: Water bottle, rain jacket and a folding chair if you prefer to sit during some of the introduction.
Skill Level: Beginner

#9 - Spey Fishing for Fall Run Trout on the Madison River in Yellowstone Park

Date/Time: Tuesday: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Instructor: Mike Loebl
Description: This will be an instruction on casting and fly presentation for lake run browns and rainbows with a two-handed fly rod. Soft hackle and streamer techniques will be focused on.
Equipment: Wading gear, Yellowstone Park fishing license, two-handed fly rod/reel with line, hat, sunglasses and water.
Skill Level: Intermediate/Advanced

#10 - One-Day Graphite Rod Building

Date/Time: Tuesday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Instructor: Howard Bethel
Description: Each student will build a graphite fly rod using a rod blank, preformed cork grip, production reel seat, etc. Starting costs for a complete rod is approximately $95 and up depending on special components. Equipment: Single edge razor blades or X-Acto knife, individual work light.
