Throughout the year I talk to thousands of people around the country that want to know what Conclave is all about. Unfortunately, I have a tough time giving them a simple answer. I can tell them that it’s the world’s greatest gathering of fly fishers; or that it’s the one place where you can learn from the experts about every aspect of our sport; or, I can tell them that it’s the very best place to make new friends and enjoy fantastic fishing. Unfortunately, anything I say falls far short of what really takes place at our annual gathering.
The pages on the Conclave portion of this website will describe nearly all of the activities available, but there is a sense that can not be captured in print, and that is the sense of community that permeates the Conclave. We are all here because of our love of fly fishing and that shared passion creates an atmosphere where every stranger seems like a long lost friend. The friendships that are forged at Conclave often last the test of time and you can count on meeting some of the nicest people in the world at every Conclave.
The demonstrations at Conclave are a highlight for many visitors. Fly tying takes center stage as nearly 100 different tyers demonstrate their skills. These are all great tyers who want to share their techniques with you. Every type of fly imaginable is on display and by spending time in the Hall with the tyers you are guaranteed to become a better tyer and angler. While you are in the hall you will want to be sure to visit the exhibitors featuring the very best for fishing and the fishing life style. Also in the main Show Hall are our Book signings, rod building demonstrations, Photo Contest, silent Auction and more!
The FFF is recognized as leading the world in fly casting. Through the Certified Casting Instructor program the FFF sets the standard for the entire world and the people who set that standard are integrated into all aspects of the Conclave experience. You will find amazing casting opportunities in workshops, demonstrations, casting games and a host of other activities, all being conducted by some of our legendary casters. If you are serious about casting you don’t want to miss a minute of Conclave.
Livingston is a great place for us to gather. It is a small town bursting with friendly people. It combines the best of the small town western atmosphere with modern vacation amenities. There are accommodations to suit every need and Livingston is famous for its amazing eateries. The town is clean, friendly and welcoming, however, it is a small town. With a population of only 6,500 you won’t have any trouble learning your way around or meeting some of the ever helpful locals. Don’t worry though if your taste runs more to larger cities. Bozeman, MT is just a 25 minute drive away and features all of the city activities and amenities that you may be used to.
Finally, I have to just briefly mention the fishing opportunities. Many books have been written about the famed waters in and around Livingston and this is truly one of the great fly fishing areas. From the diversity if Yellowstone Park to the famous major rivers; from mountain lakes to spring creeks, Livingston is in the heart of some of the finest fly fishing opportunities in the world. We have some workshops that will get you on the water but you owe it to yourself to add a couple of fishing days to your Conclave trip to make sure that you have time to relax on the blue ribbon waters that are around every corner.
